The Egyptian Maher El-Gowhary and his 15-year old daughter Dina (both in the photo) never pray twice in the same church, never stay longer than a month in the same apartment. They are constantly threatened, constantly on the run, because they have converted to Christianity in a huge Muslim country (PI reported). Based on a Dana Lewis report on Fox News LIVE SHOTS BLOG.
They tell us their story with fear and conflict. They were born Muslim, but they decided to convert to the Christian faith after both of them had seen Christian visions. Now it is such, says Maher, “that Muslims are trying to murder us, and if they find us, they will do so.” Various religious fatwas invoke “that his blood be shed.”
Maher had requested before an Egyptian court that his conversion to Christianity be legally recognized so that he can one day be buried as a Christian, and that his daughter not be forced into a Muslim marriage by her mother. The court decided that a legally recognized conversion to Christianity would threaten the public order. His attorney told us that a Christian can change over to Islam within a week, but a Muslim cannot change over to the Christian faith.
Ten percent of Egyptians are Christians, mostly Coptic Christians, and they increasingly report of appalling persecution and also murder. We even had to hide our cameras because it was told us that if the authorities found out that we were putting a report together, then we would be arrested. The religious tensions are gaining strength.
On the sixth of January, the Coptic Christmas, in front of a northern Egyptian church, three Muslims murdered seven Christians with gunshot and seriously injured a dozen more. The next day, there was unrest among the demonstrations by Christians. The area has been closed off, and the press still is not allowed access to this area.
The American Exterior Ministry reports that the recognition of religious freedom is rapidly deteriorating. Christians hold no governing offices; priests are threatened and persecuted. Christians are increasingly attacked. The reason for this is that the climate of non-punishment only encourages the perpetrators to do more violence. In some cases the authorities simply look the other way when Christians are attacked, in other cases there is clear evidence that the police themselves provoke the attacks against the Christians.
Dina wrote a letter to President Obama that has been published on Christian websites. She can no longer attend school, she doesn’t have enough clothing to keep herself warm, and there is very little food to eat. Her letter is a distressed plea, “I am writing that the Christian society here is a minority, and that we are treated badly, and I would like to communicate to President Obama that he should tell the Egyptian government to treat us well.”
