A 12-year-old girl from Saudi Arabia was soon to be wed to an 80-year-old ancient, and with the help of her mother, she tried to seperate from him — no wonder! However, what is unique, is that the schoolgirl now no longer wants to hear anything of separation; she professes to be at peace with ending her schooling, if that is to please her lord and master.
One can guess that she was brought to compliance by means of pressure put on her, that she finally said before a court, “I agree to marry. I have no reservations. This is what happens in the respect of a daughter for her father, and in obedience to his will.”
The AFP reports:
According to “El Riad,” the attorney of the girl, Sala el Dabibi, said he was “excited” about the decision. He didn’t exclude that pressure could possibly have been put on the mother and child. Also, a representative of the State Human Rights Commission, whom the mother of the child originally petitioned for help, seemed surprised by the sudden change of mind.
Since its emergence in the beginning of January, this case turned into a sensation in Saudi Arabia. The parents of the girl now live separately from her, according to the reports. The mother had tried with an accusation of rape and other things to get the marriage annulled.
Not only have Human Rights personnel and attorneys specializing in the well-being of children campaigned for the annullment, but also the influential sister of King Abdallah, Princess Adela bint Abdallah, had anxiously declared, “I, personally, and many experts on social issues and education share this opinion, that this is an affront to the rights of children,” she said to the newspaper “El Riad.”
In Saudi Arabia, the marriage of children is not illegal.
Islam is even “respect of a daughter for her father and … obedience to his will.”
