The call of the muezzin that will soon sound from the controversial Rendsburg minaret is to be allegedly no louder than a vacuum cleaner. This is the intent of the expert “noise” opinion for dealing with the “noise pollution” for religion-free ears (PI-English reported). The call of the muezzin is not to be louder than 45 decibels. Let’s see, what will the advertisement for the job position look like? Wanted: Islamic vacuum cleaner or muezzin with a quiet voice, perhaps with chronic hoarseness?
The Schleswig-Holsteinische Zeitung reports:
According to information from our newspaper, the volume of the prayer call from the minaret’s loudspeaker in Schleswig-Holstein’s largest mosque shall reach a decibel measurement of only 55 to 45 decibels within a radius of 100 meters.
In comparison, a vacuum cleaner generates more noise; at a distance of one meter the sound level measures at around 70 decibels. In a quiet bedroom at night, 30 decibels is the norm. According to the opinion, the call of the muezzin is to be similar to that of the loudness in a normal room. Thus it also follows from the experts that the Islamic Center in Rendsburg has no limitations. This means that the muezzin would be allowed to make a call for every prayer, that is, five times a day.
An ultimate decision about the muezzin call, however, does not lie with the expert opinion regarding noise. The city is still waiting on the results of a legal decision. This should be available on Monday. On Tuesday, Rendsburg’s mayor, Andreas Breitner (SPD) will then announce, whether and if, how often the call to prayer will be permitted to sound. Ahmet Yazici, the representative president of the Alliance of Islamic Fellowships (Bündnis Islamischer Gemeinden – BIG), stressed again yesterday that Muslims are for an agreeable solution: “We don’t want any hassle.”
If BIG wants no hassle, then an advertisement like the one described above would be recommended.
