After the Israeli ambassador in Spain, Rafael Shots, had already received hate letters against Israel from schoolchildren in Valencia (PI reported), even more such letters containing sayings and drawings hostile to Jews have come to him from Spanish first- and second-graders, this time from the public primary school, El Castell (photo) in Almoines. “The enclosed drawings could only have come from first- and second-graders,” the speaker for the ambassador declared.
The Spanish Ministry of Exterior whom Israel blamed for the episodes in February is not very happy to read of the countless “isolated cases” in the press. It is not the desire to awaken the impression that Spain is anti-Semitic with such expressions as “Go wherever you will be accepted!” Israel, on the contrary, is convinced that teachers and pro-Palestinian groups would use instructional units in the Spanish public schools to stir up the children to such letter-writing actions against Israel.
The taz reports:
“No information” and “We will report no position” read the only sentences that a speaker from the Education Ministry gives for themselves. Then he passes the responsibility on to someone else. The school system in Spain an affair belonging to autonomic regions, as in this case with the region of Valencia. The school authority of the conservative regional government is gathering “more information. As soon as a conclusion can be made, we will share this with you,” was stated in an E-mail containing three lines.
“There was no official complaint filed with us,” states director Batiste Malonda of the primary school El Castell, which is in question. He is unaware of any blame. As to the question, whether first- and second-graders could be old enough to deal with the conflict in the Middle East, the primary school teacher states, “That is subjective, and I will not talk about it.” And upon being addressed about the allegation of antisemitism, Malonda says, “No comment.” Then he says “We’re dealing with an activity on a school day of peace.” As in every year, teachers, schoolchildren and parents use January 30th to pick out and work on a subject. “That usually leads to an activity. This year it was postcards for the Israeli embassy,” states Director Malonda who is known as a paedagogic reformer and as an activist for the left-wing nationalist union STEPV.
For the president of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain, Jacobo Israel Garzón, the incident is “a subject of political indoctrination in the schools.” The information scientist from Madrid has complained for years about an increase in antisemitism. Surveys show that the rejection of the Jewish religion has increased now where else like it has in strictly Catholic Spain.
Of course the blame for the anti-Jewish sentiments in this case is less the Catholics than the left-wing activist self-proclaimed apostles of peace and their questionable school projects. Palestine is Peace…
