In the USA, there are still many devout Christians who, as is constantly mocked by some, are used to saying Grace before the meal. The poor, however, are no longer allowed to do so — President Obama has forbidden Christian recipients of social aid from saying prayer before the meal.
What sounds like a bad joke, isn’t. It is desired that poor Christians not be able to discriminate against anyone.
There is a guideline regarding strict separation of church and state that must be adhered to anywhere state subsidies are distributed. For the heavily Christian fellowship in the nursing near Savannah, Georgia, it was a deep shock that they were forbidden to pray before the meal by thecivil servants at the request of the government. This is certainly no unique occurrence. Throughout the whole country, the needy who receive state-subsidized food are now no longer allowed to pray before eating. Christians are reacting with resentment because, at the same time, Islamic prayer rooms and wash bowls are being built in all the large American airports and at all universities — with infusion of funds by the government!
Thus, on the other hand, the fear that religious rituals could have a discriminatory effect against those of other faiths is being targeted exclusively against Christians.
After many protests by the residents of the old people’s home in Port Wentworth the prayer ban has meanwhile been withdrawn there.
