In Paris “problem suburb” Villiers-le-Bel, police have been fired upon by live munitions. And in Lyon, the flat of a police officer was fired upon. These are the conditions that responsible politicians are allowing with eyes wide open.

In Paris’ problem suburb Villiers-le-Bel, a patrolman intended to inspect an automobile, as the police union Alliance disclosed. Right away, some fifteen armed individuals appeared that shot twice at the officer. Nobody was injured. In Villiers-le-Bel and other Parisian suburbs it riots went on for days in November 2007 after two youth died in an accident with the police.
The flat of a police officer around 30km east of Lyon was also shot at during the night before Thursday, the Vienne district attorney’s office disclosed. There was nobody injured here as well. The investigators have ruled out a connection with the violent riots in Grenoble that occurred around three weeks ago.
In Burgundy, a police car was shot upon with live ammunition in a problem neighborhood in the city Auxerre. Just before, a young man, according to the prefecture, had fled from a police check in his neighborhood and was protected there by a group with clubs and rocks.
The Justice Department has got “to bang a fist on the table” after the series of attacks, the police union declared. “Grenoble, Auxerre, and now Villiers-le-Bel — these shots were fired by criminals ready to kill in order to prevent the arrest of an offender.
In Grenoble there were riots for many nights after the police shot an armed casino robber — the young man from a North African immigrant family had shot at the police who returned fire and fatally hit him.
The French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux pointedly went on beat with the police in Grenoble. In order to increase security in the eastern French region, he furthermore set up a Regional Intervention Group (GIR). President Nicolas Sarkozy highlighted in Grenoble a short while ago that the government will wage a “national war” against criminals.
