Christian conservative ex-Senator Rick Santorum (left) is presently the clear frontrunner in polls among the American Republicans. According to a survey published Wednesday by Quinnipiac University, Santorum at 35 percent clearly stands ahead of Mitt Romney (right) at 26 percent. Gingrich and Paul stood far behind with 14 and 11 percent.
The foundering favorite Romney has increased his attacks on his opponent Rick Santorum in advance of the next US Republican primaries in Michigan and Arizona on Tuesday.
Bild reports:
In the first TV debate of the Republican candidates in almost a month, Romney charged the Christian conservative ex-senator of having helped drive national expenditures upward.
During Santorum’s term in the Senate, national spending increased around 80 percent, Romney said at the debate which was held in Mesa, Arizona. The former senator had often voted for the raising of the legal national debt limit without getting involved in reducing spending.
In addition, Santorum voted for allocation of funds to the Planned Parenthood organization, which also offers abortions.
The ex-senator accused Romney of distorting the facts. “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” he argued. Romney acknowledged Santorum’s elongated statement as to how Congress allots funds in the economy with a short comment. “I didn’t follow all of that completely,” the ex-governor said. But he would see to it that the “excessive spending” would have an end.
Romney, Santorum and the candidates Newt Gingrich (68) and Ron Paul (76) debated over a series of subjects from the economy to their opinion about contraceptives.
Santorum and Romney accused each other of having also participated as officials in the state financing of family planning. In the foreign policy part of the debate, Romney, Santorum and Gingrich outdid each other with demands for tough action in the nuclear dispute with Iran.
Because of his financially strong election campaign organization and the support through the party establishment, Romney is seen as the favorite for challenging Obama in the November election. However, the conservative base is shying even farther away from the ex-governor of Massachusetts.
The preliminary decision could fall on the so-called Super Tuesday on March 6th, when ten states vote at the same time. The official selection of the candidate takes place at the party’s nomination convention at the end of August.
Here are excerpts from the televised debate on Wednesday:
By the way, Rick Santorum is a guest on Glenn Beck. The live show will be transmitted at 11 p.m. (German time) on GBTV.com.

The Romney couple is beginning to annoy me – such hypocrisy and they would do anything for power instead of reclaiming America, especially against the evil and predatory Saudi-Qatar-led Islam (don’t forget, most of the 9-11 bombers were Saudi Muslim terrorists)! Romney’s wife made an arrogant comment in one debate with “obey me; do not speak” – what a joke! And then Romney in his Arizona debate commented along the same line as that Dictator-Mullah Obama, by proposing to support the vile fascist Saudi (i.e. the Muslim Brotherhood terrorists are the Saudi-Qatar footsoldiers) against Syria [Romney couldn't care less about the future of Syrian Christians if the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) terrorists took over Syria as it did in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt].Instead of realizing that the oil-robbing and predatory Saudi-Qatar royals and their Muslim Brotherhood footsoldiers (I suspect Al-Qaeda and other physically violent Muslim terrorists are part of the MB’s network – whilst MB is hiding behind Islamic psychological-propaganda warfare) are the worst evil after the Iranian Mullahs and its footsoldiers of Hamas and Hezbollah. Romney is just another Saudi-loving Bush! Only the honest, full of integrity, down-to-earth and brave Conservative Santorum can save America!
